~Favorite Books from 2012

I’m so behind on my planned posts, that I haven’t posted what I read in 2012 yet. Pathetic, I know. Granted, I’ve been sick – but since that never seems to stop anyone else posting, I’m not sure what a great excuse that is. So… one of my goals last year was to read more books. Despite moving twice and a rather unsettling year, I did manage to read more books that the year before. So, here’s my list of what I actually finished reading. I was going to give  a list of them all… but more than 25 titles made far too long a post! Here instead are 12 of my favorites. If there’s anything anyone would like to see me review, let me know. The one’s already reviewed, I’ll link to their posts.

~The Heavens Declare by Perry Kirkpatrick (formerly Willis) – A sweet book that incorporates facts about astronomy with the story of a family’s vacation. Review Here

~The Curate’s Awakening by George MacDonald – I loved this one! There are a few things I disagree with, but overall it was good. Review Here.

~The Musician’s Guide to Playing Music by Ear – Good book to read as a musician.

~The Lady’s Confession by George MacDonald – Another good book by Mr. MacDonald! This one was deep, full of discussions involving atheism versus Christianity. I need to review this one… I didn’t realize that I hadn’t done that.

~Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson – A very intriguing, well written mystery. A little dark at times, but worth the reading. Review Here.

~The Body in the Library by Agatha Christie – Another good Agatha Christie mystery. Better written than 4:50 from Paddington. Review Here.

~Here We Come by Chautona Havig – The third in the Aggie’s Inheritance Series. I need to review this one too. Let’s just say that I enjoyed it as much as the others!

~The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie – One of my favorites by Agatha Christie. Monsieur Poirot made his debut here. Review coming this week, LORD willing.

~Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne – One of my new favorites! Way better than the movie I saw! I need to get a copy for my hope chest!

~Finding the Core of Your Story by Jordan Smith – A really helpful book for writing loglines. Review planned – after I finish reading the second edition.

~Everard by Chautona Havig – This book now rivals the Aggie’s Inheritance Series as my favorite by Mrs. Havig. Review Here.

~Manuscript for Murder by Chautona Havig – Mrs. Havig’s first published mystery! I really enjoyed it. Review Here.

~What I’m Reading…

– – –

I thought I’d give you all an updated list of everything I’m actively reading right now. It’s been awhile. It will also give you insight into some of the books I may be reviewing in the near future! I keep trying to get myself to read more (you wouldn’t think it would be that difficult, as much as I love to read!), but it’s hard sometimes. I’ve got much better though.

Hopefully I’ll have another book review for you all next week, either on Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express or Chautona Havig’s Nobel Pursuits. Haven’t decided yet. It’s barely possible I might review Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities instead… but I doubt it just yet.

So, without further ado…

Emma by Jane Austen  Yes, I’m still reading this. Actually, I started it over and have made steady progress since.

The Lady’s Confession by George MacDonald Honestly, I thought this one was going to be a disappointment. It’s gotten better though. I’m nearly done with it now.

When I Don’t Desire God by John Piper I’ve barely started this one so far. I’m still in chapter one, actually, so I don’t have much of an opinion on it yet.

The St. Martin’s Guide to Writing by Rise B. Axelrod and Charles R. Cooper Another book I’ve barely started. It’s actually partly a workbook too, so I’m not just reading it. LORD willing I’ll go through the entire thing eventually, but I expect this to go a little slowly.

Basics of Music by Michael Zinn and Robert Hogenson This is a very informative book, which I’ve taken far too long to advance in. Another book that’s a workbook, but I have no excuse for the length of time it’s taking me to do it.

Isn’t this a pretty looking little book? To tell you the truth, I have absolutely no idea what it is about. I’m pretty sure it’s not fiction, but that’s about as far as my knowledge goes, though it may be a devotional. It’s one of my Mom’s books. It’s titled Daily Food. I’m pretty sure it’s not a cookbook though either. Maybe I should take a better look at the inside. Isn’t the front design neat?

~On My Bookshelf

My reading list is about a mile long. If I were to start listing the books that I want to read, I would probably be writing all afternoon. I thought though, that I might share a few books that I would really like to read in the near future! If you have read any of the ones on my list, I would love to hear your thoughts on them!

The Elements of Style This is probably one of the first ones on my list. I’ve looked through it a little bit and it looks like it should be good.

The Answers Book: Volume One. I read the last version on this book, but though we have owned the newer one for awhile, I haven’t gotten beyond looking at the first few pages.

The Genesis Finding Our Roots by Ruth Beechick. I’m planning to preview this one for my Mom, since we don’t know much about it. That way we know if we want to keep it or not.

When I Don’t Desire God by John Piper. I haven’t read anything by Mr. Piper before but my Mom has this book, and it looks pretty good.

Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens. I enjoyed most of the movie, but I would really love to read the original. Movies based upon Mr. Dickens novels are good, but the books are, in my experience, always better!

From Dark to Dawn by Elizabeth Charles. A friend of ours gave us this book and I’m looking forward to beginning it… eventually!

The Digital Photography Book 2 by Scott Kelby. I bought this book a long time ago, but I never read it. I’m not sure why. I should probably re-read the first one too.

The Civil War Vol. 1-3 by Shelby Foote. I have started these, but I may start them over instead of continuing, since I haven’t read them in awhile. At over 800 pages per book, I have a lot of reading planned!

Taking Back Astronomy by Dr. Jason Lisle. Another book that I bought a long time ago and never read…

Old Testament Chronology by Dr. Floyd Nolen Jones. I read about half of this book several years ago. I really want to read the entire thing this time!

Alright… that’s all for now… I want to read some books by Agatha Christie and Anna Catherine Green… then there are always more Dickens books… I should do a reread of a book or two by Jane Austen… I’ve got more Apologetics books… A book by Martin Luther… I should read Nourishing Traditions again… and… I’ll make that really be all for now. :)
