Journible: The 17:18 Series – A Review

The Journible 17:18 Series by Robert Wynalda and Dr. Joel R. Beeke

Released in 2009

Why the 17:18 series?
In Deuteronomy 17, Moses is leaving final instructions concerning the future of Israel. As a prophet of God, Moses foretells of when Israel will place a king over the nation (v. 14). In verse 18, the king is commanded to not simply acquire a copy of the law (the entire book of Deuteronomy) from the scroll publishing house, but to hand write his own copy of the law. Thirty-four hundred years later, educators are discovering that students that physically write out their notes by hand have a much greater retention rate than simply hearing or visually reading the information. Apparently, God knew this to be true of the kings of Israel also. From such understanding came the conception of this series of books.

How to Use These Books
Each book is organized so that you can write out your very own copy of Scripture. You will be writing the Bible text only on the right hand page of the book. This should make for easier writing and also allows ample space on the left page to write your own notes and comments. From time to time a question or word will be lightly printed on the left page; these questions are to aid in further study, but should not interfere with your own notes and comments.

My Review

I have the Journible for the book of Luke. I love it.

Copying out the Scriptures, while thinking through the verses and taking notes is a great way to help imprint God’s word on your mind.

The questions provided on the notes page aren’t too frequent, but they are often either thought provoking or make you consider a point that you normally gloss over. Every now and then, a question did strike me as odd – Who was Herod? – but that is likely personality type.

This is not a book you can rush through. I admit, I haven’t finished yet. Writing out the entire book of Luke by hand, takes time and effort, but it’s worth it and I have every intention of reaching completion.

I would highly recommend this series!

~”Presumption and Partiality” is Live!

After over two-and-a-half years… I am so pleased to announced that Presumption and Partiality is officially available as both a paperback and an Kindle ebook!

Isn’t it beautiful? Every single time I publish a new book, I am just as in awe as the last time. It’s an amazing, thrilling feeling to see a project, like a novel, reach the finish! So many hours of writing, prayer, editing, scrapping whole pages, prayer, typing, more editing, and even more prayer are represented by this little book. Praise the LORD that it’s reached completion!

Among the cotton fields and farmland of Gilbert, Arizona in the early years of the Great Depression, Mr. and Mrs. Bailey live a simple, but happy life with their five daughters on a cotton farm. When the wealthy Richard Buchanan moves to town, bringing his family, a friend, and a desire to learn about cotton, Matilda Bailey is convinced that he is the perfect candidate to marry her eldest daughter, Alice.

Richard is cheerful, friendly, and likable. His friend Sidney Dennison doesn’t make such a good impression. Eloise Bailey decides he’s arrogant and self-conceited, but when Raymond Wolfe comes to town, accusing Sidney of dishonorable and treacherous conduct, Eloise is angered at the injustice of the situation.

When the Buchanan household leaves town, Alice must turn to the Lord and face, perhaps, her most difficult test in trust, while Eloise takes a trip to visit her friend and may well discover a web of deceit that she doesn’t really want to believe exists.

~New Release – 24 Days Before Christmas!

24 Days Before Christmas - Cover XXVII

It’s here! My Christmas mystery, 24 Days Before Christmas, is published and now available!

December has fallen on the tiny town of Poinsettia and, with it, the Christmas season. The Singh and Winter families are already feeling celebratory, as they begin sharing family traditions and memorizing Christmas carols.

Things take a decidedly unexpected turn, when their neighbor and good friend, Ebenezer Bell, comes home from vacation and can’t find his brother. Blood on the carpet, an absent vehicle, and missing fingerprints start to point the finger at a possible crime.

When James Hoffman moved his sister and daughter to Poinsettia with the bright idea of opening a bookshop, he expected things to be tight, but not this tight. The readers of Poinsettia seem to be few and far between, and James is beginning to second guess his decision. His sister insists on trusting the God that he doesn’t even believe in, but when he discovers an old enemy, bringing his buried anger back to the surface, even his sister’s trust is shaken.

Carols and crime, memories and mystery, doubters and danger – will there be a merry Christmas after all?

It’s been five years, almost to the exact day, since I first wrote the opening lines for 24 Days Before Christmas. Five years. This book has been written, rewritten, torn apart, and added to so many times that, in some ways, it doesn’t even resemble it’s original version. That first line, however? Paragraph really. It no longer opens the book, but it survived all those revisions, ending up, instead, in the middle of my second chapter. It’s still one of my favorite passages from the book.

I did something different with this book. Even though it happens to be my longest novel, there are only 25 chapters. One for each day of the month of December, leading up until Christmas, and then one for December 25th. This book was so fun to write, but difficult as well. It also takes place in a new setting from my other books. 180 miles out from my fictional town of Halcer, is Poinsettia. A fitting place for a Christmas mystery, don’t you think?
